Lilith, Adam's First Wife

by Olessia Kantor
Genesis Lilith Eve Adam

The canonized bible tells us of the creation of the world. In the beginning, God separated the sea on the land with the waters of the sky; he created plants and animals of the sea, animals on land and finally, God’s masterpiece: Adam…and Eve.

Well, tonight I want to share with you perhaps a less shared story…and maybe you can tell me why you think it has all but disappeared into the fringes of this male dominated society that we live in today.

Genesis 1:26-27 tells us, “ So God created mankind in the divine image, male and female God created them.” Adam and his mate Lilith were thusly created from the same dust. Based upon this Lilith claimed equality with Adam and the two would fight constantly. Adam wanted to dominate her, while she asked for a turn to dominate him. After a period of disagreement, Lilith decided to leave Adam.

God sent three angels after her and commanded them to bring her back to her husband even if she resisted. When the angels found her by the Red Sea, they were unable to command or convince her to return with them.

A bargain was struck amongst them. Lilith who proclaimed to have been created by God to possess and kill children for eight days (boys) and twelve days (girls) would harm no children who wore an amulet bearing the three angles names.
