Breaking the Bondage of Negative Thoughts

by Susan Regisford,

As long as I can remember, writing has been a source of comfort for me. It gets the thoughts out of my head where they rumble around making a lot of noise and creating confusion. On paper, thoughts can be placed in order and their validity can be disputed. Suddenly, the confusion fades away as you realize that there was very little truth in those thoughts and they were designed to manipulate you into feeling anxious and afraid. Often though, when you are in an emotional state, you rarely feel inclined to grab a pen and paper to write down your thoughts and before you can check your thoughts, you’ve been swept right along with your emotions and you grab on to the first preserver that you see, which usually is the same bad habit you have been working desperately to change.

Unhealthy thoughts can control your life if you are not vigilant and cognizant of the forces at work daily in your lives. The bible clearly tells us that the mind is where the battle wages on. It is where the Devil tries to control us and keep us in bondage. If we cannot control our minds, we may always remain victims of our thoughts; yet, I take it one step further, if we do not learn to dispute the error of our thoughts, we will forever make the same mistakes. Thoughts are the cornerstone of our lives. It’s thoughts that propel us; however, whether they propel us down the path to success or failure depends on how our minds have been cultivated. Therein lies the problem for many people, the cultivation of a healthy mind. There are so many factors that affect how we think and sadly the majority of our thinking habits are developed during our childhood. So how do we rewire our brains to think healthy thoughts?

First, I make this disclaimer, I am not a minister, a reverend nor a priest; I am simply a person who has spent decades trying to find answers. Despite the various iterations on that theme, I am just like you no matter the color of my skin. My blood is red just like yours and I cry tears when I am hurt just like you.

I believe the answer to that lies in the bible. For years, I thought I could control everything in my life; yet, there were a few areas that I struggled with consistently. Interestingly, it’s those very areas that the Devil has used to manipulate/control me for as long as I can remember until early one morning as I was praying and God spoke to me: “Fear not for I am with you always and you are stronger than your emotions”. It is often difficult to feel strong in a world where you frequently feel small and inconsequential; however, you are stronger than your emotions. You are stronger than the negative thoughts that try to force you down that road of bad habits and behaviors because “God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”. Remember that when you feel overwhelmed by emotions and things seem bleak and appear impossible to overcome, God has not forsaken you.
